Less Common Cosmetic Facial Surgeries By Joseph M. Brown, MD, FACS on January 16, 2018

The popularity of plastic surgery is booming around the world. Surgeries being performed in countries such as South Korea are so popular that they contribute significantly to the country’s GDP. In other countries, people often look for less common surgeries that are different from the ones that Americans want. In South Korea, for example, people ask their surgeons to make their chins pointier and their noses less flat. They also ask to alter their eye shapes to look more like Western eyes. South Korea has the highest per capita rate of plastic surgery in the world. In a very conservative culture like Iran, facial plastic surgery is a way to enhance beauty when women dress more modestly. Of the 40,000 annual cosmetic procedures in Iran, more than 60% are nose jobs.

We have all heard of people going to a cosmetic surgeon for a facelift or a nose job. These are examples of cosmetic facial surgeries which are very common. In addition to these popular procedures, Tampa Aesthetic & Plastic Surgery also offers some of the less common cosmetic facial surgeries that you may want to consider. Did you ever think about working on your ears? How about your eyelids? Or your neck? Dr. Joseph M. Brown, MD, F.A.C.S. and his expert team are more than welcome to answer any questions or concerns you may have about undergoing some of the more uncommon types of plastic surgery in Tampa.

Neck Liposuction

Even if you have been able to lose weight in other areas of the body, you may retain stubborn body fat in the neck that just won’t budge. You may feel like you have a “double chin” that makes you unhappy when you see photos of yourself. The most efficient way to correct this and restore a natural contour of the neck is through neck liposuction. One advantage to surgical removal of fat is that the procedure is performed one time with one period of recovery. Swelling should go down in several weeks, and patients may resume their exercise routine 2-3 weeks after surgery. Neck liposuction may be performed under local or general anesthesia depending on if it is performed alone or in conjunction with other procedures.

Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

Eyelid surgery performed on the lower lids can eliminate under eye bags, puffiness, wrinkles, and sagging skin. On the upper lids, this procedure can drastically treat excess skin that often adds years to a patient’s face. Aside from its cosmetic purposes, this procedure also corrects obscured vision due to the eyelid drooping into the field of view. Upper and lower eyelid procedures can be done alone or combined depending on the patients needs.

Blepharoplasty is becoming a popular cosmetic surgery for men. Since men are usually shyer about advertising that they have had work done, this is a good option for them since there is virtually no scarring and very little recovery time (about a week.)

Ear Correction (Otoplasty)

Ear correction surgery can improve the shape, position, or proportion of the ear. This procedure can treat overly large ears, a condition known as macrotia. It can also treat protruding ears on one or both sides of the head. Sometimes, patients may come to Dr. Brown with dissatisfaction from a previous ear surgery elsewhere, looking for an effective revision.

In cases of protruding ears, ear surgery offers almost immediate results, which are visible when the dressings that support the new shape of the ear during healing are removed. When the ear is permanently positioned closer to the head, surgical scars are either hidden behind the ear or well hidden within the natural creases of the ear. The results of more extensive ear surgery and reconstruction may appear in stages over time.
