Ear Surgery Tampa
What Is Otoplasty?
Otoplasty is also commonly known as cosmetic ear surgery, or ear pinning. This procedure corrects any abnormalities of your ears by either reshaping or repositioning them. This surgery can treat the current aesthetic imperfections of your ears either caused by genetics, birth defects, injury, or trauma. Otoplasty is performed for cosmetic or reconstructive reasons or even both. Although otoplasty is technically ear surgery, it is important to note that it does not address hearing ability.
Why consider Otoplasty?
Your ears can either balance and complement your face’s overall appearance or distinctly stick out and act as a detractor from your other features. Ears that may be larger or stick out more than normal are cosmetic issues that many people deal with. Children may struggle with being teased for having “dumbo ears”. It is common to feel insecure about the way your ears look. Glasses may always be an awkward and uncomfortable fit. You may even base your hairstyles or headwear with the sole purpose of downplaying or covering your ears. Fortunately, Dr. Brown of Tampa Aesthetic & Plastic Surgery specializes in the ear surgery procedure designed to improve the look of ears that are outwardly protruding, asymmetrical, or oddly shaped. Complement your facial appearance with ears that are more size appropriate and natural looking with Dr. Brown. Call our office and schedule your consultation today!

Reasons For Otoplasty
The following are the most common aesthetic issues why people undergo cosmetic ear surgery:
- Outwardly Protruding / “Dumbo” Ears
- Asymmetrical / Lopsided Ears
- Overly Large Ears
- Deformities Caused By Prior Injury / Trauma
Benefits Of Otoplasty
Similar to all cosmetic procedures, otoplasty is designed to help enhance the appearance of a problem area for patients. Dr. Brown and his staff can help you:
- Become more aesthetically pleasing.
- Increase self-confidence and happiness with your appearance.
- Remove the need to hide your ears with hair or accessories.
- Enjoy a relatively short recovery period.
For children and teens this procedure can have even more profound effect as it can help them with all of the above at a time in their life where fitting in and normalcy is very important.
Ideal Candidates For Otoplasty
If you are insecure and tired of being teased for your ears, otoplasty is perfect for you. In addition, an ideal patient for the procedure should be in good general health and have realistic expectations.
The Procedure
Otoplasty is performed as a single visit outpatient procedure with general or local anesthesia with sedation. Depending on the complexity or severity of the correction, ear surgery should take around 2 to 3 hours. Dr. Brown will use minimally invasive techniques behind the ear to eliminate or minimize any signs of surgery or scarring.
Recovery
The recovery process for otoplasty is relatively simple for a cosmetic procedure. You can expect to experience normal bruising, swelling, and bleeding in the treated area for about 1 week. During the that first week Dr. Brown recommends that you sleep with your head slightly elevated to help expedite the healing. In most cases, patients are advised to wear bulky bandages over the ears and then transitioned to a light headband. Pain medication and antibiotics will also be prescribed to patients for pain and infection prevention. Most adults can expect to return to work in about a week. Throughout the recovery period we encourage all patients to perform lighter physical activity than usual.
After Care & Recovery
You can expect normal swelling and pain to occuring in the treated area. Icing is important for alleviating pain as well as reducing the swelling and bruising.
