What Is Liposuction?

Liposuction, also referred to as lipo, is a popular cosmetic surgery that removes stubborn fat using a hollow tube called a cannula. This plastic surgery targets fat deposits in the abdomen, thighs, hips, neck, and other areas to help you achieve a contoured figure that looks natural. Liposuction is not a weight loss solution. In fact, for maximum results, patients should be at or near their ideal weight before their liposuction procedure.

Benefits of Liposuction

Patients can enjoy many benefits when choosing this cosmetic surgery. Liposuction remains one of the most popular procedures in the world and at our Tampa plastic surgery office because it can help patients reach their aesthetic goals.

Benefits after surgery include:

  • Sculpted and contoured body shape
  • Increased confidence and self-esteem
  • Long-lasting results

Am I a Lipo Candidate?

The first step to finding out if liposuction is right for you is to request a consultation. During your initial consultation at our office in Tampa, our plastic surgeon will work with you to find the best way to reach your goals. You might be a candidate for liposuction if you:

  • Are in good overall physical health
  • Are close to your ideal healthy weight
  • Have fat that does not disappear with diet or exercise
  • Have firm and elastic skin
  • Have realistic body goals and expectations

Preparing for Your Liposuction Procedure

Taking certain measures before surgery can ensure your procedure goes as smoothly as possible. It can also dramatically improve your recovery. Before your surgery, you should avoid:

  • Shaving
  • Wearing tight clothing
  • Drinking alcohol
  • Using tobacco
  • Blood-thinning medications
  • Herbal supplements

The Liposuction Procedure

You will first have a consultation at our plastic surgery office in Tampa, FL, to determine if lipo is safe and the right surgical procedure for you. On the day of your plastic surgery, you will need a trusted adult to drive you to and from surgery, as medications and anesthesia make it unsafe for you to drive.

Anesthesia

Some patients choose to receive general anesthesia to put them to sleep for the entire procedure. Others are more comfortable with lighter sedation. Dr. Brown will help you decide what is best for you as part of your consultation. The goal is for you to be as comfortable as possible.

Incisions

Once you are completely comfortable, your surgeon will make small incisions in the area you are treating.

Fat Removal

The cannula is placed through the incisions and fat deposits are broken up and removed. The method of removal will vary based on the technique used for your plastic surgery. The amount of fat removed will also vary by patient. By law, we cannot remove more than four liters of fat. Liposuction is not a weight loss procedure, but a way to fine-tune your body.

Sutures

Once Dr. Brown is satisfied with the results, he will close the incisions with sutures. In some cases, drainage tubes may be placed.

Recovery

You will be taken to a recovery area and monitored for a short period. You will then be released to continue your recovery at home. Most patients can resume their normal activities within a week of their procedure.
"Dr. Brown listened to what I wanted, and he was very thoughtful, caring and most importantly the outcome was exactly what I wanted. I feel happy in my body now and I would like to thank the entire office for their compassion and professionalism." Janelle Vann
