What to Expect from Kybella Facial Treatment By Joseph M. Brown, MD, FACS on February 05, 2018

You may find that even after eating well and exercising, your double chin does not go away. This can be embarrassing and make you look older and heavier than you actually are.

Kybella is the leading FDA-approved injection treatment for double chin, clinically known as submental fullness. If you experience submental fullness, are over 18 years old, and want to avoid surgery, Kybella may be the right choice for you.

How Kybella Works

Kybella contains a synthetic version of deoxycholic acid, which is naturally found in our digestive tract and aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into the fat beneath the chin, Kybella destroys the fat cells, resulting in a reduction in fullness under the chin. Once destroyed, these cells can no longer store or accumulate fat, so results are permanent and there is no further treatment once you complete your initial round.

What Should I Tell My Doctor Before Treatment?

Before receiving Kybella, make sure to tell your doctor about all your medical conditions. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, it is unknown how Kybella will affect your unborn baby or your breast milk. Be especially sure to tell your doctor if you are taking blood thinners or have bleeding problems. Also tell them about any other medications you are taking. Inform them of any surgery or cosmetic treatments you have had or plan to have on your face, neck, or chin. Tell them about any medical conditions in or near the neck area.

What to Expect During Treatment

Your doctor will use ice to numb the area under your chin. A marking grid will be placed under the chin, and a series of tiny injections will be carefully placed into the area of concern. The injection process takes about 15 -20 minutes. The number of injections placed will depend on the amount of fat you have under your chin and your desired profile.

What to Expect After Treatment

After treatment you may experience swelling, bruising, or numbness under your chin. Some signs of inflammation like swelling and redness are actually signs that the treatment is working. You can take an NSAID pain reliever to ease discomfort. You may return to normal activity right away after treatment.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

Your healthcare specialist will help you determine how many treatment sessions you need based on the amount and distribution of your submental fat and your personal treatment goals. Each Kybella treatment session is given at least one month apart, usually a minimum of two treatments are required; most patients have three to four treatments. You should not have more than six treatments of Kybella in total. Once you have completed your treatment series you will never need to repeat the process again.

What are the Possible Side Effects of Kybella?

Kybella can cause serious side effects, including nerve injury in the jaw that can temporarily cause an uneven smile or facial muscle and trouble swallowing. Call a doctor immediately if you develop an uneven smile, facial muscle weakness, or difficulty swallowing. The most common side effects occur in the treatment area and include:

• Swelling • Bruising • Pain • Numbness • Redness • Areas of hardness

Is There a Way to Save on Treatments?

Yes! Kybella offers the Brilliant Distinctions program, which allows you to earn points on each Kybella treatment that you can redeem for savings on future treatments. You can also earn and redeem points on other selected treatments. Talk to your doctor to find out which are eligible. In addition, you can also earn points when you shop online at your favorite retailers participating in the Brilliant Distinctions Mall. As a member, you will receive treatment reminders and information about your points balance.
