PLASTIC SURGEON IN TAMPA
Breast Reduction (Reduction Mammaplasty)
Women who have excessively large breasts often suffer from back and neck pain, skin irritations, and are usually limited in doing the things they want such as performing specific exercises or wearing certain pieces of clothing. Dr. Brown performs breast reduction, or reduction mammaplasty surgery to help such women at Tampa Aesthetic & Plastic Surgery. The procedure removes fat, glandular tissue, and skin from the breasts, making them smaller, lighter, and firmer. It can also reduce the size of the areola, the darker skin surrounding the nipple. The goal is to give the woman smaller, better-shaped, lifted breasts that are in proportion with the rest of her body. Breast reduction surgery can provide a woman with self-confidence and helps to alleviate many symptoms.
It is important to find a highly skilled surgeon who has experience with this procedure. It is important to maintain a good blood supply to the nipple areola complex as there is risk of discoloration and loss of sensation when blood flow is restricted. Liposuction is also implemented in some cases to remove the excess fat while the loose skin will be excised and tightened to form the newly shaped breasts. This procedure is also implemented as a way to correct an issue of breast asymmetry.
The most common incision for breast reduction is what they call “the anchor” or a vertical T. With this kind of approach, the incision is made around the areola, extends vertically down to the breast crease, and then is followed by another horizontal incision along the direction of the fold. The areola will be repositioned once the breasts have been resized and recurved. A lift will also be done so that the breasts will be placed higher on the chest.
What to Expect
Your visit with Dr. Brown will include a thorough history and physical exam to obtain critical breast measurements. This will help determine the estimation of tissue to be removed. We will submit a letter to your insurance to ascertain whether or not they will cover the procedure. There will be a preoperative visit with Dr. Brown and his team, where you will be given your necessary prescriptions and instructions on what to do the day before/the day of/the days after surgery. Dr. Brown will be directly involved with all aspects of your care through the process and welcomes questions along the way.
If this is your only surgery, you will likely go home the same day as your breast reduction surgery. Walking around is encouraged the day of surgery, but no exercise is permitted for two weeks. At two weeks, light activity may be resumed and vigorous exercise may be resumed at 6 weeks. Swelling is expected and can take a few months to completely resolve.
