PLASTIC SURGEON IN TAMPA
After Weight Loss Body Contouring
Losing weight is not easy and requires strict discipline, shifts in habits, commitment to diet/exercise regimen, and in some cases, major bariatric surgery. There is no “easy street” to take in order to get to achieve your goals and Dr. Brown applauds patients who are able to do so. In many cases, massive weight loss carries the unfortunate consequence of stretched out skin that will not improve despite maintenance of healthy body weight. These patients have a tendency to develop loose skin in the face, neck, arms, breast/chest, abdomen, thighs, and buttock region. In many instances, surgery is the only treatment that will restore contour and remove the extra skin. Patients who are considering this should be at or close to their goal body weight and stable for several months. Many patients who undergo body contouring surgery find this to be a life changing experience that completes the transformation process.
Conditions – treatment
- Sagging face/neck skin – facelift (rhytidectomy), neck lift (platysmaplasty)
- Sagging breasts – breast lift (mastopexy) with or w/o implant
- Deflated breasts – breast augmentation with implant
- Loose arm skin (the “bat wing”)– arm lift (brachioplasty)
- Hanging skin on the abdomen – tummy tuck (abdominoplasty)
- Hanging/loose skin on thighs – thigh lift (thighplasty)
Some patients are candidates for each of these surgeries and choose to have everything addressed. Our goal is to help you achieve your goal, but to do it safely. Some of these procedures may be performed at the same time during one operation. However, in many cases, staged operations must be performed in order to achieve the best results in the safest manner. Dr. Brown will help you prioritize which areas are the most important to you and, together, you will create your safe surgical plan on how to safely achieve your goals.
What to Expect
After weight loss body contouring is considered a major operation and requires strict adherence to safety principles both in and out of the operating room. It is important for patients to have stable weight and maintain excellent nutritional status, as this is essential to proper healing and recovery. If several surgeries are being performed at once, there may be an overnight stay in the hospital. Surgery may take 5 hours or more, depending on the severity of excess skin and the number of surgeries being performed. While scarring is a part of this surgical process, a skilled plastic surgeon will make every effort to ensure that the incisions are kept as inconspicuous as possible. For most patients, the scars are minimal compared to the dramatic life changing results achieved with these operations.
